When it rains it pours. But when lightning strikes, it can destroy precious data forever. Summer brings heat and lightning storms that can wreak havoc on electronic computer systems, motherboards, power supplies and hard drives.

According to the National Weather Service, the United States experiences approximately 100,000 thunderstorms with 20 million lightning strikes every year. While it’s unlikely your computer will ever take a direct hit by lightning, the real threat comes from power events known as spikes, surges and blackouts that accompany severe weather.

Power spikes are instantaneous, dramatic increases in voltage that occur when power is restored after a blackout or a lightning strike. They can damage or completely destroy electronic components.

A power surge is a short-term increase in voltage, typically lasting at least 1/120th of a second. Surges result from the presence of high-powered electrical motors, such as air conditioners and household appliances being powered on in the vicinity.

Inexpensive surge protector strips are not an adequate defense against these kinds of power problems. Here at DriveSavers, we protect all of our many computers and storage devices with uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and backup generators. A UPS contains battery backup units that supply a limited amount of power just long enough to gracefully shut down a computer system.
